The tramway and trolleybus may once again become an integral part of Tbilisi’s daily routine as the City Hall has voiced plans for the reintroduction of electric transport in the capital over the forthcoming years.
The first public announcement on the subject was made by Tbilisi mayor, Gigi Ugulava on October 17, while taking part in the official opening of Climate Change Week in Georgia.
According to the Mayor, the municipal transport for the city – buses running on diesel – consumes fuel costing 29 million lari per year. In addition to the high cost of the current system, he pointed to environmental concerns as an incentive behind the new initiative.
“Municipal buses contribute substantially to environmental pollution. The municipality seeks to gradually replace its diesel buses with electrified transport,” claimed Ugulava. “Our state will prioritize and subsidize electric transport.” http://www.georgiatoday.ge/article_details.php?id=8365
